For many young adults, the transition to higher education is a stepping stone. For A.R., a former foster youth, it is a masterclass in determination and strategic vision.
A.R. possesses a rare and powerful internal asset: the ability to maintain momentum and stay focused even when the ground beneath him is uncertain. “Going through difficult and uncertain situations taught me that I have to take advantage of opportunities when they come,” A.R. shares. It’s this innate, self-taught resilience that has allowed him to take complete charge of his life and career trajectory today.
The Foundation to Focus
When A.R. first connected with Seed House Project, he didn’t need to be taught how to work hard—he needed a place to stand still long enough to learn how to build. Prior to joining our community, much of his energy was consumed by the day-to-day realities of navigating adulthood without a traditional safety net—and without anyone to show him how that navigation actually works.
“Having stable housing through Seed House gave me a foundation,” A.R. explains. “It gave me the opportunity to focus on more than just getting through each day. It gave me the space and time to focus on building my life.”
That foundation was more than four walls. It was a home and a team who truly cared about him—and it was paired with Life School, Seed House’s model for teaching the parts of adulthood that school never covers: how to manage money with intention, how to advocate for yourself in a workplace, how to set goals and actually follow the steps to reach them. For A.R., that meant learning to navigate life with the same confidence he’d need to navigate a balance sheet.
Cultivating Financial Mastery
Today, A.R. is a thriving student at Pierce College, where he is actively preparing to transfer to California State University, Northridge (CSUN) to study accounting. With a keen eye for numbers and a strategic mindset, his ultimate goal is to launch a career in the financial services industry.
A.R. isn’t just studying finance in the classroom; he is practicing financial independence in the real world—skills he built through Life School’s financial literacy curriculum long before he needed them for a degree. Recognizing his dedication, Seed House partnered with A.R. to help him secure a position at Costco, allowing him to gain invaluable workplace experience and build a robust financial foundation while balancing his rigorous academic schedule.
The Harvest of True Independence
When looking at his growth, the transformation is clear. “I see myself becoming much more independent,” A.R. says proudly. “Now, I’m most excited about becoming fully independent and continuing my education.”
That independence isn’t just academic or financial—it’s the quiet confidence of someone who now knows how to make a plan, adjust it, and see it through. That’s the part of the classroom no school ever taught him, and the part Life School was built to.
A.R.’s story is a powerful reminder that system-impacted youth do not lack ambition or capability; they simply lack a stable foundation and someone to teach them how to build on it. By investing in his own potential and leveraging the resources at Seed House—a home, a caring community, and a life-skills education—A.R. is rewriting his narrative and paving the way for others to do the same.
“I hope my experience shows other young people that where you start doesn’t have to determine where you end up.”
